WASHINGTON, Oct. 27, 2011 - Original Fried Pies, Inc., a Davis, Okla., establishment, is recalling approximately 8,888 pounds of frozen meat and poultry pie products, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today because they are misbranded and contain sodium benzoate, a food preservative, which does not appear on package labels and is not approved for use as an added ingredient in meat and poultry products.

The products subject to recall include:

• 4-pound sealed bags of "CHEESE SAUCE WITH EGG & SAUSAGE."
• 4-pound sealed bags of "CHEESE SAUCE WITH EGG & BACON."
• 4-pound sealed bags of "CHEESE SAUCE WITH BROCCOLI AND WHITE MEAT CHICKEN."
• 4-pound sealed bags of "SAUCE WITH VEGETABLES AND WHITE MEAT CHICKEN."

The products bear the establishment number "EST. 33883" or "P-33883" inside the USDA mark of inspection and the 'Made in Oklahoma' logo on the label. The products were produced between April 27 and Oct. 27, 2011 and distributed for use at restaurant locations in Arkansas, Colorado, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas.

The problem was discovered during routine FSIS verification procedures. FSIS and Original Fried Pies, Inc. have received no reports of illnesses or adverse reactions due to consumption of these products.

FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the products are no longer available to consumers.
