
New Mexico Firm Recalls Beef Jerky Products Produced Without the Benefit of Inspection

WASHINGTON, Oct. 3, 2014 Vigil Beef Jerky Co., an Albuquerque, N.M. establishment, is recalling approximately 48 pounds of beef jerky products because they were shipped with the mark of inspection when they were produced under a retail exemption, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

- 1-oz. bags of iVIGIL'S BEEF JERKY CO. ORIGINAL BEEF JERKY” with package code i8121421210” and packaging date of i8/12/14”
- 3-oz. bags of iVIGIL'S BEEF JERKY CO. TERIYAKI BEEF JERKY” with package code i8271427410” and packing date i8/27/14”
- 1-oz., 3-oz., and 6-oz. bags of iVIGIL'S BEEF JERKY CO. JALAPENO BEEF JERKY” with package code i09021425110” and packaging date i9/2/14”
- 1-oz., 3-oz., and 6-oz. of iVIGIL'S BEEF JERKY CO. ORIGINAL BEEF JERKY” with package code i09031411110” and packaging code i9/3/14”
- Any VIGIL BEEF JERKY CO. product with the mark of inspection produced from Aug. 5 Sept. 2, 2014, with lot codes ending in i10” plus the one lot on Sept. 3, 2014 identified above
All products bear the establishment number "EST. 34272" inside the USDA mark of inspection. The products were sold in retail establishments in New Mexico.
The problem was discovered as a result of an ongoing investigation. FSIS believes the company produced product under a retail exemption but made use of the Federal mark of inspection, which is a violation of Federal regulations.
FSIS has received no reports of illness due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an illness should contact a health care provider.
