Swine Modernization Radio Actualities
Listen to radio actualities from Acting Deputy Under Secretary Carmen Rottenberg:
- Cut 1
[FSIS is excited to continue modernizing inspection practices, while still allowing opportunities for industry to innovate and streamline food production. You know, there's no single technology or process to address the problem of foodborne illness, but we know that when we focus our inspections on food safety-related tasks as we are proposing in this proposed rule, we better protect American families.] - Cut 2
[Under the proposed rule, FSIS would continue to conduct 100% carcass-by-carcass inspection and that is required by statute and there will be no change to that. The inspectors will still be there all hours of operation inspecting every single carcass. USDA inspectors would then conduct more offline food safety tasks that place them in areas of the production process where they can really perform critical tasks that have a direct impact on food safety. ] - Cut 3
[The Department of Agriculture is proposing a regulatory change that will establish a new optional inspection system for market hog slaughter establishments. It's called the New Swine Inspection System and it's based on a 16-year pilot that the agency has conducted. In addition, to the New Swine Inspection System, the proposed rule will also require additional pathogen sampling for all swine slaughter establishments. The New Swine Inspection System will be optional and the pathogen sampling will be for all swine slaughter establishments. The proposed rule allows for innovation and flexibility to establishments that are slaughtering market hogs. Market hogs are uniform, healthy, young animals that can be slaughtered and processed in this modernized system more efficiently and effectively, and we believe, with enhanced process control.]
