Information about Face Coverings/Masks and Face Shields

Face coverings/masks and face shields are required protective gear for FSIS inspection program personnel. The shields are another layer of protection to help mitigate employees’ exposure to COVID-19. They can also help minimize contamination of masks and cloth face coverings, something that safety glasses cannot do.

The shields should be worn with face masks/coverings when employees are on the slaughter or processing floor, or otherwise performing their duties. Employees are also required to wear the face masks properly – covering both the nose and the mouth – while at work. When not performing duties on the slaughter or processing floor, employees are to wear the face masks/coverings only (except when eating and drinking), especially if sharing a space with others.

Cleaning, De-Fogging and Disinfecting Instructions

Face Shields with Headband (FSIS-89):

To clean your face shield of dust, debris, or non-infectious fluids, use warm water and dishwashing detergent. Allow to air dry. To remove streaks or spots, use standard glass cleaner (e.g., Windex) and a soft cloth or paper towel.
You may order FSIS-57 FSIS Anti-Fog Wipes from the USDA Materiel Management Service Center (MMSC) supply center. Alternatively, you may (1) wipe the face shield with a solution comprised of 1 oz. white vinegar to 16 oz. warm water, or (2) wash the face shield with liquid dishwashing detergent. A thin film of soap left behind helps prevent fogging.
It is currently estimated that COVID-19 can live on hard industrial surfaces (e.g., metal, plastic, and glass) for up to several days. To disinfect your face shield, use 70% isopropyl alcohol solution and a soft cloth, isopropyl alcohol wipes, food grade dilute phosphoric acid (Star-San), or store your visor in a paper bag for a minimum of 3 days. DO NOT use hydrogen peroxide since it will gradually fog the visor.

Hardhat-Compatible Face Shields (FSIS-90 and FSIS-90A):

Release the shield from the carrier by turning the latching tabs to allow them to pass through the oval holes along the top of the shield. Gently wash both components with a mild detergent and a soft cloth 2 (microfiber is recommended), giving attention to the outer surfaces of both parts. Rinse off detergent with clean water. Dry both components with a soft cloth.
If further disinfecting is desired, the surfaces may be wiped with Isopropyl Alcohol and a soft cloth, then allowed to dry. Re-attach the face shield to the carrier.
The inner surface of the shield may then be treated with an anti-fog wipe or spray if deemed necessary.
