WASHINGTON, Sept. 20, 2007 - The Office of the Undersecretary for Food Safety, U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services today announced a public meeting to provide information and receive comments on agenda items and draft U.S. positions for the 29th Session of the Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses (CCNFSDU) to be held Nov. 12 - 16, 2007, in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler, Germany. In addition, an ad hoc working group on the revision of the standard for gluten-free foods will meet on Nov. 10, 2007.

The public meeting will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2007, from 1 to 4 p.m., in the FDA Auditorium (1A003), Harvey Wiley Federal Building, 5100 Paint Branch Parkway, College Park, Md. Parking is adjacent to the building and will be available at no charge to attendees who pre-register.

Attendees must pre-register and present photo identification at the door. To pre-register, please send your name, organization, mailing address, phone number and e-mail address to nancy.crane@cfsan.fda.gov by Sept. 20, 2007. Agenda items and documents related to the 29th Session of the CCNFSDU will be available at www.codexalimentarius.net/current.asp.

Codex was created in 1963 by two United Nations organizations: the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization. Codex develops food standards, guidelines and codes of practice in order to protect the health of consumers, ensure fair food trade practices and promote coordination of food standards undertaken by international governmental and non-governmental organizations.

The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) invites interested persons to submit comments on this notice. Interested persons may send their comments to Dr. Barbara Schneeman at CCNFSDU@cfsan.fda.gov.
