WASHINGTON, April 2, 2009- The United States Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is introducing a Spanish language Food Safety at Home podcast series. These podcasts are another convenient and innovative way for the Spanish speaking community to learn the four basic steps of the Be Food Safe campaign: Clean, Separate, Cook, and Chill.

“These podcasts are part of an FSIS initiative to educate Spanish-speaking consumers on safe food handling practices and the risks associated with foodborne illness, said FSIS Administrator Al Almanza. “Each episode will discuss valuable information on the safe handling, preparation, and storage of meat, poultry, and processed egg products when cooking at home.”

These podcasts showcase public health experts discussing a variety of topics that will help consumers keep their food safe. Listen in to learn about other FSIS resources, such as the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline and “Ask Karen,” the FSIS virtual representative, which are available to answer your food safety questions any time of day.

FSIS invites consumers to subscribe to the free podcast service by visiting http://www.fsis.usda.gov/News_&_Events/Feeds/index.asp. Once subscribed to the RSS feed, new broadcasts will be downloaded automatically to the feed reader used by the subscriber.

Consumers can find information on food safety by visiting “Ask Karen”, the FSIS virtual representative available 24 hours a day at AskKaren.gov. The toll-free USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline 1-888-MPHotline (1-888-674-6854) is available in English and Spanish and can be reached from l0 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Eastern Time) Monday through Friday. Podcasts and SignFSIS video-casts in American Sign Language featuring text-captioning are available on the Web site at: http://www.fsis.usda.gov/news_&_events/multimedia/.
