WASHINGTON, Jan. 4, 2008 - The Office of the Under Secretary for Food Safety, U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services today announced a public meeting to provide information and receive public comments on agenda items and draft U.S. positions to be discussed at the Eighth Session of the Codex Committee on Natural Mineral Waters (CCNMW) of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (Codex), to be held in Lugano, Switzerland, Feb. 11-15, 2008.

The public meeting will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008, from 9 a.m. to noon, in Room 1A001, FDA, Harvey Wiley Federal Building, 5100 Paint Branch Parkway, College Park, MD 20740. Pre-registration for the public meeting is not required, however, attendees must present photo identification to gain admittance to the building. Agenda items and documents related to the Eighth Session of CCNMW may be accessed prior to the public meeting at www.codexalimentarius.net/current.asp

The CCNMW was originally established by the Codex Commission as a regional Codex Committee, but was subsequently allocated the task of elaborating world wide standards and guidelines for natural mineral waters and bottled water other than natural mineral water.

Codex was created in 1963 by two United Nations organizations, the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization. Codex develops food standards, guidelines and codes of practice in order to protect the health of consumers, ensure fair food trade practices and promote coordination of food standards undertaken by international governmental and non- governmental organizations.

For further information regarding the Eighth Session of the CCNMW or to submit comments in advance, contact Acting U.S. Delegate to the CCNMW Dr. Henry Kim, at (301) 436-2023, or by e-mail at henry.kim@fda.hhs.gov.

Persons requesting a sign language interpreter or other special accommodations should contact Edith Kennard, U.S. Codex Office, FSIS, at (202) 720-5261, or by e-mail at edith.kennard@fsis.usda.gov.
