FSIS, Federal Partners to Present Webinar on Progress Toward Attribution of Foodborne Illness

FSIS, FDA and the CDC will present a webinar on progress toward attributing foodborne illnesses to food sources on Friday, Jan. 10, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. ET.

The webinar, “Are Outbreak Illnesses Representative of Sporadic Illnesses?,” will describe the most recent activities of the Interagency Food Safety Analytics Collaboration (IFSAC), a tri-agency partnership focused on projects related to attribution of foodborne illnesses. As part of the webinar, presenters will share an analysis for comparing the characteristics of illnesses associated with foodborne outbreaks with those that are not linked to outbreaks.

National Residue Program Quarterly Results Posted

FSIS is publishing a report covering the fourth quarter, July-September 2013, to summarize the chemical residue results for the U.S. National Residue Program for meat, poultry and processed egg products (NRP). From the stakeholder perspective, FSIS’ quarterly publication of chemical residue testing results will increase both the program transparency and frequency of access. The report is intended to supplement the annual U.S. residue report known as the Red Book, which FSIS will continue to publish. This is an opportunity to provide stakeholders and the public more timely information on chemical residues in FSIS-regulated meat, poultry and processed egg products. This information provides industry (pharmaceuticals, producers, veterinarians working with producers) more timely information to more effectively respond to chemical residue violations. It also complements other agency residue information made public including: Residue Repeat Violator list, NRP sampling plan (Blue Book) and NRP Residue Sample Results (FSIS Red Book). FSIS Posts Third Quarter Salmonella and Campylobacter Report

Today, the agency posted to its website the third quarterly progress report of calendar year (CY) 2013 on Salmonella and Campylobacter testing of selected raw meat and poultry products.

This report provides preliminary data from July to September 2013 on all establishments eligible for Salmonella testing that have completed at least two sampling verification sets since June 2006.

As of September 2013, of all establishments in all product classes (broiler, ground beef, ground chicken, ground turkey, turkey), 81.8 percent are in category 1, which illustrates an increase from second quarter CY13.

From 175 broiler establishments, 1969 samples were analyzed with a 4.5 percent positive rate, representing an increase from the 2.6 percent positive rate for second quarter CY13. Ongoing adjustments in category percentages are expected as establishments transition into the July 2011 tightened performance standards. Category 3 rates have not increased during this period. This table lists percentages of broiler establishments by category as of September 2013.

FSIS continues to post monthly the names of broiler establishments demonstrating variable or inconsistent process control. The agency highlights performance for the broiler class because of its negative impact on foodborne illness. Since April 2008, FSIS has been posting category 3 broiler carcass establishment names.

FSIS will continue to post monthly the names of poultry establishments demonstrating variable or inconsistent process control.

This report is also the first to include Salmonella and Campylobacter data tables related to the agency’s Not Ready-To-Eat (NRTE) Sampling Project.

Note: This is also the tenth quarter to include Campylobacter sampling results for young chicken and turkey carcasses. A follow-up Constituent Update will be issued to discuss these results in greater detail as more data becomes available.

FSIS Webinars Scheduled to Discuss Final Rule on New Generic Labeling

Effective January 6, 2014, FSIS is expanding the circumstances in which labels may be considered “generically approved.” This new rule will allow establishments to label a broader range of products without first submitting the label to the agency for approval. Companies will still need to submit labels bearing certain claims, such as organic, natural or animal-raising, as well as labels for temporary approval; products produced under religious exemption; and export-only that bear labeling deviations. FSIS will continue to verify that labels are accurate, not misleading and in compliance with all labeling features.

Update: FSIS Testing for E.coli

FSIS posts biweekly updates for the agency’s raw ground beef E. coli sampling program. Included are testing results of raw ground beef component samples for E. coli O157:H7 and STECs from FSIS routine and follow-up sampling programs. Also featured is data for non-O157 STECs by each non-O157 STEC serogroup.

Between June 4, 2012, and December 15, 2013, FSIS laboratory services analyzed a total of 4,719 beef trim samples (4,106 domestic and 613 imported), 1,642 routine follow-up samples (1,528 domestic and 114 imported) and 25 non-routine follow-up/traceback samples. Sixty-eight samples were found to be positive: 33 were domestic trim samples, one was an imported trim sample, 32 were domestic follow-up samples, and two were non-routine follow-up/traceback samples. To date, two samples have been positive for both O157:H7 and non-O157 STEC, and five samples have been positive for two different non-O157 O-groups.

Upcoming NACMPI Meeting

The National Advisory Committee on Meat and Poultry Inspection (NACMPI) will meet Jan. 7-8, 2014, in Patriots Plaza III located at 355 E St., SW, Washington, DC. The meeting will focus on safe food handling labels and the FSIS establishment-specific data released in the strategic plan.  

On January 7, the plenary session will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., ET. Two subcommittees will meet concurrently from 1-5 p.m. The full committee will reconvene on January 8, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
