Mislabeling
FSIS develops and provides labeling guidance, policies and inspection methods and administers programs to protect consumers from misbranded and economically adulterated meat, poultry, and egg products which ensure that all labels are truthful and not misleading. The consumption of meat and poultry products containing ingredients of public health concern, such as Undeclared Allergens, may result in adverse health outcomes for certain individuals. Guidelines are based on the principles to identify hazards and cross-reference components, prevent and control cross-contamination, and declare, which emphasizes prevention of mislabeling during packing, labeling, and storage. Guidelines are aimed at ensuring product labels declare all ingredients, as required in the regulations, and that products do not contain undeclared allergens or other undeclared ingredients.
