USDA Recall Classifications

Class I - High or Medium Risk
This is a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.
Class II - Low Risk
This is a health hazard situation where there is a remote probability of adverse health consequences from the use of the product.
Class III - Marginal Risk
This is a situation where the use of the product will not cause adverse health consequences.

WASHINGTON, 26 de octubre de 2013 – Reser’s Fine foods, un establecimiento en Topeka, Kansas, está expandiendo el retiro de productos de pollo, jamón y carne de res para incluir productos producidos entre el 5 de septiembre y el 9 de octubre 2013. Este anuncio es en adición al retiro del 22 de octubre, 2013 de 22,800 libras de producto. El retiro es debido a la posibilidad de contaminación con Listeria monocytogenes, según lo informó hoy el Servicio de Inocuidad y Inspección de los Alimentos (Food Safety and Inspection Service por sus siglas en inglés, FSIS) del Departamento de Agricultura de los EE. UU. (U.S. Department of Agriculture, USDA).

La compañía anuncio que los productos han sido retirados en asociación con otro retiro de productos iniciado por la Administración de Drogas y Alimentos, FDA por sus siglas en inglés). La lista completa de productos retirados se puede encontrar en el sitio Web del FDA aquí. Los productos inspeccionados por FSIS llevan el número de establecimiento "Est. 13520” o “Est. P- 13520 dentro de la Marca de Inspección del USDA.

Los productos fueron transportados para venta al por menor y a distribuidores a nivel nacional..

El problema se descubrió durante pruebas microbiológicas iniciadas por la agencia de inspección de los alimentos de Canadá. Una investigación y siguientes pruebas en el establecimiento por el FDA, determinaron que hubo posibilidad de contaminación cruzada de Listeria monocytogenes en los superficies del establecimiento. Por caso de revisión adicional, la compañía determino que los productos  hechos en las fechas adicionales merecían estar retirados. Ni FSIS o la compañía han recibido informes de enfermedades como consecuencia del consumo de estos productos. Cualquier persona que tenga inquietudes respecto de enfermedades o de lesiones debe ponerse en contacto su proveedor de servicios de salud.

El FSIS verifica de forma rutinaria la efectividad de los retiros para comprobar que las firmas que los realizan notifiquen a sus clientes al respecto y para garantizar que se tomen las medidas necesarias para asegurarse de que los productos ya no estén disponibles para los consumidores. Conforme esté disponible, un(os) listado(s) de distribución será(n) colocado(s) en la página de internet del FSIS en: www.fsis.usda.gov/recalls.

Recomendaciones para las personas en riesgo de listeriosis:

  • Lávese las manos con agua tibia jabonosa por al menos 20 segundos antes y después de manejar carnes y aves crudas. Lave las tablas de cortar, platos y utensilios con agua caliente jabonosa. Limpie los derrames inmediatamente.
  • Mantenga las carnes, aves, pescados crudos lejos de otros alimentos que no va a cocinar. Use una tabla de cortar para carnes, aves y productos de huevo crudos y otra diferente para alimentos cocidos. 
  • No coma salchichas hot dog, embutidos, Bolonia u otras carnes de fiambrería, salvo que hayan sido recalentadas hasta el punto de emitir vapor.
  • No coma patés refrigerados, productos de carne para untar o pescados ahumados que se encuentren en la sección refrigerada de la tienda.  Los alimentos que no necesitan refrigeración, como lo son el atún enlatado y el salmón enlatado, son sanos para comer. Refrigérelos después de abrirlos.
  • No beba leche cruda (sin pasteurizar) ni coma alimentos que contengan leche sin pasteurizar.
  • No coma ensaladas preparadas en la tienda, como las de jamón, pollo, huevo, atún o mariscos.
  • No coma quesos blandos como feta, queso blanco, queso fresco, Brie, Camembert, quesos con vetas azules y Panela, salvo que indique en la etiqueta que esta hecho con leche pasteurizada.
  • Use los alimentos pre cocidos o los alimentos listos para comer tan pronto pueda. La Listeria puede crecer en el refrigerador. El refrigerador debe estar a 40 ºF (4.4 ºC) o menos y el congelador a 0 ºF (-17.8 ºC) o menos. Use un termómetro para aparatos electrodomésticos  para verificar la temperatura de su refrigerador.
