
Dr. Soumaya Tohamy

Dr. Soumaya Tohamy was named the assistant administrator for the Office of Employee Experience and Development in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) in May 2018. Dr. Tohamy’s duties are aligned with FSIS’ Strategic Goals--Goal 1: Prevent Foodborne Illness and Protect Public Health; Goal 2: Transform Inspection Strategies, Policies and Scientific Approaches to Improve Public Health; and Goal 3: Achieve Operational Excellence. She is responsible for ensuring that employees have the critical skills and training they need to support the agency’s mission of protecting public health by preventing foodborne illnesses. Dr. Tohamy also leads FSIS’ training modernization initiative including interactive technology.
In her previous role as deputy assistant administrator, she coordinated data analysis and integration activities. Prior to that, Dr. Tohamy spent five years in FSIS’ Office of Policy and Program Development as the policy analysis staff director and the deputy assistant administrator. Dr. Tohamy has led economic analyses for the agency, contributing to the FSIS mission of preventing foodborne illnesses and protecting public health by ensuring that meat, poultry and egg products are safe, wholesome and properly labeled. Before Dr. Tohamy joined the agency, she developed economic analyses and led strategic planning and performance evaluation initiatives at the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Dr. Tohamy holds a Bachelor of Arts in economics from the American University in Cairo and a doctorate in economics from Emory University.
