Missouri Firm Recalls Chicken Salad Products Due To Misbranding and Undeclared Allergen

WASHINGTON, Jan. 30, 2014 – Walker’s Food Products Co., a North Kansas City, Mo., establishment, is recalling approximately 2,446 pounds of chicken salad products because of misbranding and an undeclared allergen, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.  The products are formulated with a soy protein concentrate, a known allergen, which was not properly declared on the labels.

The products subject to recall include:                                                    

  • 5-lb. plastic tubs of “Walker’s All White Chunky Chicken Salad” with packaging dates between June 6, 2013 and Jan. 23, 2014 and use by/sell by dates between July 26, 2013 and March 14, 2014 and sold to wholesale locations in Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma.
  • 1-lb. plastic tubs of “Walker’s All White Chunky Chicken Salad” with packaging dates between June 6, 2013 and Jan. 23, 2014 and use by/sell by dates between July 26, 2013 and March 14, 2014 and sold to retail locations in Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma.
  • 5-lb. tubs of “Walker’s White Chicken Salad Florentine” with packaging dates between June 6, 2013 and Jan. 27, 2014 and use by/sell by dates between July 14, 2013 and March 6, 2014 and sold to wholesale locations for distribution in Kansas and Missouri.

The products subject to recall bear the establishment number “P-13335” inside the USDA Mark of Inspection.  

The problem was discovered by an FSIS in-plant inspector during a routine label review. The problem occurred after a change in product suppliers without a corresponding change in label. 

FSIS and the company have received no reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. For individuals allergic to soy, consumption of soy protein concentrate presents a reasonable probability of serious health consequences or death. Anyone concerned about a reaction should contact a healthcare provider.

FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers. When available, the retail distribution list(s) will be posted on the FSIS website at www.fsis.usda.gov/recalls.

USDA Recall Classifications
Class I This is a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.
Class II This is a health hazard situation where there is a remote probability of adverse health consequences from the use of the product.
Class III This is a situation where the use of the product will not cause adverse health consequences.
