Recent Committee Meeting
Joint FAO/WHO Coordinating Committee for Latin America & the Caribbean (CCLAC) concluded today its 19th session in San José, Costa Rica. The following are a few highlights, and the full report of the session will soon be published by the Codex Secretariat at: http://www.codexalimentarius.org/meetings-reports/en.
- The Committee recommended that the Codex Alimentarius Commission appoint Chile as the next regional coordinator when the term for the current coordinator, Costa Rica, expires in 2015. Mexico announced an intention to seek election as the representative for Latin America & the Caribbean at the next Commission session in July 2015.
- The Committee agreed to continue work on a regional standard for yacon, a tuberous root vegetable similar to jicama. The Committee also supported a proposal for new work on a global standard for quinoa, noting that work should be conducted electronically in consideration that the relevant Committee on Cereals, Pulses, and Legumes (CCCPL) has been adjourned since 1995.
- The Committee expressed concern about the public health problems and trade difficulties attributable to a lack of harmonization associated with E. coli which produces shiga-like toxin (STEC) in meat, and it expressed support for new work on this issue at the upcoming session of the Committee on Food Hygiene.
- The Committee reiterated the importance of a scientific basis for setting Codex standards, and encouraged support for expert panels that provide risk assessment advice to the Commission. The Committee also advocated elimination of Note 161 (exceptions for national legislation) in the General Standard for Food Additives (GSFA).
