Recent Meetings

Codex Alimentarius Commission:  The 37th Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission met in Geneva, Switzerland, July 14-18, 2014.  In addition to approving 17 new pieces of work, the following is a quick overview of other accomplishments at the CAC this year: 

Amendments to the Procedural Manual

  • Use of the Concern form for the CCRVDF
  • Elimination of the reference to the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) in the Terms of Reference of the Codex Committee on Fresh Fruits and Vegetables (CCFFV)
  • Definitions of Risk Analysis Terms Related to Food Safety: hazard characterization and risk estimate
  • Revised Risk Analysis Principles applied by the Codex Committee on Pesticide Residues (CCPR)

Adoption of Standards at Step 8 and 5/8, including:

  • Risk Management Recommendations for Veterinary Drugs in Food for which no ADI or MRL could be established by JECFA due to specific health concerns
  • Guidelines on Performance Characteristics for Multi-residues methods (MRMs) for Veterinary Drugs
  • Guidelines for the Control of Taenia Saginata in meat of domestic cattle
  • Revised Code of Hygienic Practice for Spices and Dried Aromatic Herbs
  • Definitions of the Principles and Guidelines for the Conduct of Microbiological Risk Assessment
  • Performance Criteria for Methods for the Determination of Marine Biotoxins in the Standard for Live and Raw Bivalve Molluscs
  • Revised MLs for lead in Infant Formula and Formula for Special Medical Purposes and for Follow-Up Formula
  • MLs for Inorganic Arsenic in Polished rice
  • MLs for fumonisins in maize and in maize products
  • Annex to the Prevention and Reduction of Aflatoxins and Ochratoxin A Contamination in Sorghum
  • 343 MRLs for 32 pesticides, including 11 new compounds
  • Approximately 550 new provisions for food additives

Aside from the adoption of the new standards, the Commission also elected a new bureau:  Ms. Awilo Ochieng-Pernet of Switzerland as Chairperson, and Mr. Guilherme Antonio da Costa Jr. of Brazil; Ms. Yayoi Tsujiyama of Japan, and Mr. Mahamadou Sako of Mali as Vice-Chairpersons.

Request for Comments

Coordinating Committee for North America and the South West Pacific (CCNASWP) requests comments and information in Circular Letter CL 2014/19-NASWP, on (i) national food control systems; (ii) Codex at national level; and (iii) Codex standards--national priorities and interest for discussion at the upcoming 13th Session of the CCNASWP.  If you are interested in having your data considered in the U.S. response to this circular letter, please send your comments to the U.S. Codex Office (uscodex@fsis.usda.gov) by August 15, 2014.  Other Members and interested International Organizations are asked to send their comments directly to the Codex Secretariat (codex@fao.org) with a copy to the Codex Contact Point of Papua New Guinea (codexcontactpoint.png@gmail.com) by August 30, 2014.   A copy of the CL maybe found at:  http://www.codexalimentarius.org/circular-letters/cl-2014/en/.

Electronic Working Groups (eWG)

Committee on Pesticide Residues (CCPR) invites Members and Observers to join an eWG, led by the United States of America and co-chaired by China and India, working in English only, to further revise the Proposed Draft Guidance on Performance Criteria for Methods of Analysis for the Determination of Pesticide Residues.  The eWG will also take into consideration relevant CCRVDF and CCMAS documents.  The United States, China and India invite Codex Members and Observers interested in participating in this EWG to provide their name(s), official title and e-mail address of their representatives to Dr. Pat Basu (Pat.Basu@fsis.usda.gov), Dr. Camping Pan (panc@cau.edu.cn), Dr. Krishan Kumar Sharma (kksaicrp@yahoo.co.in) and the United States Codex Contact Point (uscodex@fsis.usda.gov) by August 15, 2014.

Committee on Contaminants in Foods (CCCF)

Mycotoxins in Spices:  The Committee invites Members and Observers to join an eWG, chaired by India and co-chaired by European Union and Indonesia, working in English only, to prepare a discussion paper that will review mycotoxins in spices for prioritization of the work in spices. Individuals in the United States interested in participating should provide their name, official title, and e-mail address to the U.S. Codex Office (USCodex@fsis.usda.gov) by July 30.  Individuals in other Member countries and organizations interested in participating should forward their information directly through their Codex Contact Points to Dr. Dinesh Singh Bisht, India (ccsch.bisht@gmail.com), Mr. Frans Verstraete, European Union (frans.verstraete@ec.europa.eu) and Dr. Joni Munarso, Indonesia (joni_munarso@yahoo.co.id; jomunarso@gmail.com; codex_kementan@yahoo.com) with a copy to:  codex-india@nic.in and ccsch@indianspices.com by July 31, 2014.

Aflatoxins in Peanuts:  The Committee invite Members and Observers to join an eWG, led by India, and working in English only, to initiate new work on establishing Maximum Levels (MLs) for Total Aflatoxins in Ready-to-Eat (RTE) peanuts. Individuals in the United States interested in participating should provide their name, official title, and e-mail address to the U.S. Codex Office (USCodex@fsis.usda.gov) by July 30.  Individuals in other Member countries and organizations interested in participating should forward their information directly through their Codex Contact Points to Mr. Devendra Prasad (dprasad@apeda.gov.in) with a copy to codex-india@nic.in by July 31, 2014.

Arsenic in Rice:  The Committee invites Members and Observers to join an eWG, led by Japan and China and working in English, to develop a Code of Practice for the Prevention and Reduction of Arsenic Contamination in Rice. Individuals in the United States interested in participating should provide their name, official title, and e-mail address to the U.S. Codex Office (USCodex@fsis.usda.gov) by August 10, 2014.  Individuals in other Member countries and organizations interested in participating should forward their information directly through their Codex Contact Points to JPPSDCCCF@nm.maff.go.jp and wuyongning@cfsa.net.cn no later than August 15, 2014.
