Committee on Sugars (CCS):   The Codex Secretariat has issued a Circular Letter (CL 2016/15-CS) on a Request for Comments: Report on the draft standard for non-centrifuged dehydrated sugar cane juiceThe CL is available in English, French and Spanish on the Codex Website at the following link: http://www.fao.org/fao-who-codexalimentarius/circular-letters/en/.  If you are interested in having your comments considered in the U.S. response to this CL, please send your comments to Marie Maratos in the U.S. Codex Office (marie.maratos@fsis.usda.gov) by June 1, 2016.  Other comments should be sent directly to the Codex Secretariat (codex@fao.org) with copies to the Contact Point of Colombia (bolarte@minsalud.gov.co) and to Javier Munoz (jmunoz@mincit.gov.co) by June 10, 2016.

Call for Data:  FAO has issued a call for data for the elaboration of a table of nitrogen factors for quick frozen fish sticks, fish portions and fish fillets, including a procedure for determining nitrogen factors. The data should include information on:

  • Fish species studied
  • Farmed or caught
  • In case of farmed fish, farming conditions
  • Harvest areas and dates (using FAO areas and subareas if possible:  http://www.fao.org/fishery/area/search/en)
  • Type of fish product analyzed to derive nitrogen factor (e.g. dry fillet, minced block)
  • Sample type (e.g. one fillet, 250gm of block)
  • Number of samples, standard deviation
  • Method of analysis

The data could be from peer reviewed publications or from accredited laboratories performing analysis of fish and fisheries products.  Data may be submitted in any of the following languages:  English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, and Russian.  Individuals in the United States interested in providing data should send it to the U.S. Codex Office (USCodex@fsis.usda.gov) by May 27, 2016. Data submission from other Codex members and Observers can be done by e-mail (small files) directly to esther.garridogamarro@fao.org  and Iddya.Karunasagar@fao.org, or by uploading larger files to a secure FTP site, by May 31, 2016.  Please contact the FAO directly for the FTP site information.

JECFA Report:  The report of the 81st Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA), which met in Rome, Italy, from November 17-26, 2015, on the Evaluation of Certain Veterinary Drug Residues in Food is now available at the following link: http://apps.who.int/iris/bitstream/10665/204670/1/9789240695504_eng.pdf?ua=1.
