Recent Committee Meetings

Committee on Fresh Fruits and Vegetables (CCFFV) concluded its 17th Session today in Mexico City, Mexico. The session was attended by 39 Member countries, 1 member organization, and observers from 1 international organization. The Committee agreed on the following:

  • to forward the draft standard for Avocado to the Commission for adoption at Step 8 and the sizing section and uniformity provisions for adoption at Step 5/8;
  • to forward the draft standard for Golden Passion Fruit to the Commission for adoption at Step 5;
  • to return the draft standard for Durian to Step 2 for redrafting by an electronic Working Group (eWG) that will be led by Thailand;
  • to start new work on a standard for Okra and established an eWG that will be led by India;
  • to establish an eWG, led by India, to consider a draft proposal for a standard on Ware potatoes;
  • to establish an eWG, led by the United States and working in English only, to evaluate possible revision of Codex standards in light of revision of UNECE and OIV standards; and
  • to establish an eWG, led by Japan, working in English, Spanish and French, to review the Terms of Reference (TOR) of the CCFFV, as was instructed by the Commission. The eWG will determine whether the TOR are in line with certain paragraphs in document CX/FFV 12/17/13 and the TOR of other commodity committees in Codex.

Upcoming Public Meetings

Committee on Processed Fruits and Vegetables (CCPFV) will hold a public meeting to go over the agenda for its next Session on September 17 from 1:00-3:00 p.m., in the Jamie Whitten Building of USDA, 1400 Independence Ave. SW, Washington DC, Room 107-A. Individuals may also participate via teleconference by calling 1-888-858-2144; Participant Code: 6208658. The upcoming Session of CCPFV will be co-hosted by the United States and Jamaica, from October 15-19, 2012, in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Working Groups

Committee on Contaminants in Foods (CCCF) has extended the deadline for Member countries and observer organizations interested in joining the electronic Working Group (eWG), led by the United States, on the revision of maximum levels for lead for various foods in the General Standard for Contaminants and Toxins in Food and Feed to September 15. Member countries and observer organizations interested in participating in this eWG should provide the name(s), official title, and email address of their representative(s) directly to lauren.robin@fda.hhs.gov with a copy to the USCodex@fsis.usda.gov.

Committee on Residues of Veterinary Drugs in Foods (CCRVDF) 
Concern Form: Member countries and observer organizations are invited to participate in an eWG on the proposed "concern form" for use in the CCRVDF. The eWG, led by Brazil and co-chaired by Australia, working in English only, will further develop the scope of the "concern form," as well as the format and procedure policy for its use. The eWG will take into account the work of the Committee on Pesticide Residues (CCPR) which already uses a "concern form" in its standards development. Member countries and observer organizations interested in participating in the eWG should provide the name(s), official title, and email address of their representative(s) to the Brazilian Codex Contact Point (codexbrasil@inmetro.gov.br and suzana.bresslau@agricultura.gov.br) as well as to the Australian Codex Contact Point (codex.contact@daff.gov.au) by September 14.

CCRVDF also agreed to establish a physical Working Group (pWG) on the "concern form," which, like the eWG, will be led by Brazil and co-chaired by Australia, but will work in English, Spanish and French. The pWG will immediately precede the start of the next Session of the CCRVDF, scheduled for August 26-30, 2013.

MRLs in Honey: Member countries and observer organizations are invited to participate in an eWG, led by the United Kingdom, to prepare a discussion paper and project document for new work on guidelines for the establishment of Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) or other residue limits of veterinary medicines in honey. The goal of the eWG is to have several rounds of comments, with the final document to be circulated by the Codex Secretariat by the end of April 2013. Member countries and observer organizations interested in participating in the eWG should provide the name(s), official title, and email address of their representative(s) to Dr. Jack Kay (j.kay@vmd.defra.gsi.gov.uk) by October 15.

Multi-Residue Methods: Member countries and observer organizations are invited to participate in an eWG, co-chaired by the United Kingdom and Canada, to revise the draft report on performance criteria for multi-residue analytical methods submitted to the 20th CCRVDF for inclusion as an Appendix to the Guidelines for the Design and Implementation of National Regulatory Food Safety Assurance Programmes Associated with the Use of Veterinary Drugs in Food Producing Animals (CAC/GL 71-2009). The eWG will also develop a generic validation protocol for these methods for consideration at the next Session of the CCRVDF. The goal of the eWG is to have several rounds of comments, with the final document to be circulated by the Codex Secretariat by the end of April 2013. Member countries and observer organizations interested in participating in the eWG should provide the name(s), official title, and email address of their representative(s) to Dr. Jack Kay ( j.kay@vmd.defra.gsi.gov.uk) by October 15.

Comments Requested

Committee on Processed Fruits and Vegetables (CCPFV): The existing eWG on Food Additives associated with desiccated coconut, table olives, and certain processed fruits and vegetables, led by the European Union and co-chaired by the United States, is requesting any further comments on the Food Additive Provisions for Processed Fruits and Vegetables: Additional Provisions for inclusion in selected adopted standards and standards under development, prior to the upcoming Session next month. Member countries and observer organizations interested in submitting comments should send them to the U.S. Secretariat for CCPFV (ccpfv@fsis.usda.gov) and USCodex@fsis.usda.gov), with a copy to the Codex Secretariat ( codex@fao.org) by September 30.

Committee on Food Labelling (CCFL) requests comments at Step 6 on the draft Section 7.2 of the Guidelines for Use of Nutrition and Health Claims (CAC/GL 23-1997): Non-Addition of Sodium Salts. The comments will be considered at the next Session of CCFL to be held in May 2013. Parties in the United States interested in contributing to the U.S. participation in this eWG should contact the U.S. Codex Office (USCodex@fsis.usda.gov). Member countries and observer organizations interested in submitting comments should send them to the Canadian Codex Contact Point ( codex_canada@hc-sc.gc.ca) with a copy to the Codex Secretariat ( codex@fao.org) by January 25, 2013.
