Recent Committee Meetings
FAO/WHO Coordinating Committee for North America and South West Pacific (CCNASWP): The 12th Session of the Committee met this week in Madang, Papua New Guinea, and was attended by 53 delegates from 14 Member countries, two Member countries from other regions, two International Organizations and representatives of the FAO and WHO.
Prior to the Session, the FAO/WHO held a two-day technical workshop on issues under consideration by the committees of interest to the Pacific Island Countries, specifically Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses (CCNFSDU), Food Labeling (CCFL), and Food Import and Export Inspection and Certification Systems (CCFICS).
During the Session, the Committee discussed and commented on the most recent draft of the Codex Strategic Plan. The Committee also endorsed the decision of the Commission to discontinue work on the Processed Cheese standard. Regarding the Discussion Paper on Kava, the FAO and WHO will provide technical assistance to answer some of the outstanding scientific issues. Likewise, Australia and Canada will help Tonga revise the Discussion Paper on Noni to narrow the scope so that it is relevant to the region. Both revised Discussion Papers will be considered at the next CCNASWP session, tentatively scheduled for 2014. A more detailed account of this Session will be featured in the Delegate's Report that will be available in the next couple of weeks on the following page: http://www.fsis.usda.gov/wps/portal/fsis/topics/international-affairs/us-codex-alimentarius/recent-delegation-reports
