Upcoming Committee Meetings

The Executive Committee (CCEXEC) of the Codex Alimentarius Commission will meet in Geneva, June 28-July 1, to prepare for the Commission session that begins on July 4. CCEXEC will conduct the critical review of draft standards proposed for Commission decisions, monitor standards development, and consider recommendations for new work and for the discontinuation of work. The U.S. Codex Manager will represent the U.S. views at CCEXEC.

Recent Public Meetings

The U.S. Codex Office hosted on June 16 the public meeting for U.S. delegates to present the proposed U.S. positions for the items on the agenda of the upcoming Codex Alimentarius Commission session. Darci Vetter, Deputy Under Secretary of Agriculture for Farm and Foreign Agricultural Services, and Brian Ronholm, Deputy Under Secretary of Agriculture for Food Safety, were introduced as the co-Heads of the U.S. Delegation. In their introductory comments, both emphasized the vital importance of supporting science-based decision-making in Codex standard-setting.

Outreach

Andrea Barrios, the International Standardization Director for Mexico who has the Mexican Codex Office as part of her portfolio, visited Washington, June 14-17, for consultations with the U.S. Codex Office and with Codex subject experts in other Federal agencies.

Other News

Indonesia announced its intention to nominate Roy Sparringa, Deputy Chairman for Food Safety and Hazardous Substances Control in the National Agency for Food & Drug Control, for election as one of three Vice Chairpersons of the Codex Alimentarius Commission. There are four other declared candidates for the Vice Chairperson positions: Samuel Godefroy of Canada, Delfin Kinkese of Zambia, Awilo Ochieng Pernet of Switzerland, and Samuel Sefa-Dedeh of Ghana. Sanjay Dave of India is the sole declared candidate for election as Chairperson.
