Recent Committee Meetings
Committee on Contaminants in Foods (CCCF): The 7th Session of CCCF met in Moscow, Russian Federation, and completed its work last Friday. Some key outcomes from the Session include:
- The United States led the electronic Working Group on lead which had as its focus the reduction of exposure to lead to the greatest extent possible, starting with foods consumed by infants and children, such as fruit juices, milk, and infant formula. The CCCF was successful in getting agreement on several new proposed maximum limits (MLs) for lead in selected commodities.
- While the Committee agreed to retain the current MLs of 0.02 mg/kg for milks and 0.2 mg/kg for cereals, it forwarded the revised proposed MLs of 0.03 mg/kg for fruit juices and nectars, ready-to-drink (excluding juices and nectars from berries and other small fruits), 0.1 mg/kg for canned fruits, including canned mixed fruits (excluding canned berries and other small fruits), and 0.1 mg/kg for canned vegetables, including canned mixed vegetables (excluding canned brassica vegetables, canned leafy vegetables, and canned legume vegetables) to the Commission for adoption at Step 5/8.
- Although a revised ML of 0.01 mg/kg for lead in infant formula was proposed, it was not finalized, with the Committee deciding to wait for more data. If more data is not provided, the Committee will consider adopting the 0.01 mg/kg ML next year.
- The CCCF also took up MLs for Deoxynivalenol (DON), forwarding proposed MLs of 2 mg/kg for raw cereal grains (wheat, maize, barley) and 1 mg/kg for flour, semolina, meal and flakes derived from wheat, maize or barley to the Commission for adoption at Step 5.
- The United States expressed its reservation on the proposed ML for raw cereal grains, stating that milling can substantially reduce DON levels and setting a ML could restrict trade.
- The Committee also forwarded a proposed ML of 0.2 mg/kg for DON in cereal-based food for infants and young children to the Commission for adoption at Step 5/8.
- The Committee forwarded a Code of Practice for the Prevention and Reduction of Ochratoxin A in cocoa Commission for adoption at Step 5/8.
- The Committee also forwarded Code of Practice to Reduce the Presence of Hydrocyanic Acid in Cassava and Cassava Products to the Commission for adoption at Step 5/8.
Committee on Pesticide Residues (CCPR): At the upcoming Session of CCPR, scheduled for May 6-11, in Beijing, China, a one day workshop on the safety assessment of pesticide residues will be held prior to the start of the meeting, on Sunday May 5th. The workshop will provide an overview on how the risk assessment of pesticides is performed by the FAO/WHO Joint Meeting on Pesticide Residues (JMPR) for purposes of establishing Maximum Residue Limits for pesticides. It will also go over the Risk Analysis Principles applied by CCPR in setting the Codex schedules and priority lists of pesticides for the evaluation and re-evaluation of new / existing chemicals by JMPR, and in deciding the revision, retention or withdrawal of Codex MRLs/Pesticides. Cases of chemicals that JMPR has evaluated with no support from the manufacturer will also be discussed. The workshop aims to assist the Committee in their deliberation on the revision of the Risk Analysis Principles, in particular the Periodic Review Procedure.
Committee on Food Labeling (CCFL): The 41st Session of the Codex Committee on Food Labeling (CCFL) will convene May 14—17ml, in Charlottetown,Prince Edward Island, Canada. The Among other matters, the Committee will discuss issues related to Guidelines for the Production, Processing, Labeling and Marketing of Organically Produced Foods and the Consideration of Labeling Provision in Draft Codex Standards. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) of the United Nations are sponsoring an information meeting on “Front of Pack Labelling,” from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 16th. The purpose of this meeting is to provide information to CCFL delegates and observers regarding the issues related to front-of-pack labeling (FOP). Topics include the role and use of FOP, how FOP is developed, challenges with FOP, as well as some country experiences with FOP. Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses (CCNFSDU): Dr. Paula Trumbo, Director (A), Nutrition Programs in the Office of Nutrition, Labeling and Dietary Supplements, Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was recently confirmed as U.S. Delegate to the CCNFSDU.
Committee on Food Labelling (CCFL): Felicia Billingslea, Director, Food Labeling and Standards Staff in the Office of Nutrition, Labeling, and Dietary Supplements, Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was recently confirmed as U.S. Delegate to the CCFL.
