Codex News - January 24, 2014

Upcoming Public Meetings

Committee on Fresh Fruits and Vegetables (CCFFV):  USDA and FDA will convene a public meeting on January 30, 2014, from 1:00-3:00 PM, to review draft U.S. positions on agenda items that will be considered at the 18th CCFFV session, scheduled for February 24-28, 2014, in Phuket, Thailand.  The public meeting will take place in Room 107-A of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Whitten Building, 1400 Independence Ave, SW, Washington, DC 20520.  Individuals may also participate via teleconference by calling:  1-888-844-9904; Participant Code: 512-6092.

Agenda items include:  Draft Codex Standard for Golden Passion Fruit (at Step 7), Proposed draft Codex Standard for Durian (at Step 4), Proposed draft Codex Standard for Okra (at Step 4), Review of the maturity requirements in the Codex Standard for Table Grapes, Proposal for new work on a Codex Standard for Ware Potato, Review of the Terms of Reference of the CCFFV, and Proposed layout for Codex standards for fresh fruits and vegetables.

Committee on Methods of Analysis and Sampling (CCMAS):  USDA and FDA will convene a public meeting on February 5, 2014, from 2:00-4:00 PM, to review draft U.S. positions on agenda items that will be considered at the 35th CCMAS session, scheduled for March 3-7, 2014, in Budapest, Hungary.  The public meeting will take place at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Harvey Wiley Federal Building, 5100 Paint Branch Parkway, Room 1A002, College Park, MD 20740.  Individuals may also participate via teleconference by calling:   1-301-796-2700 or Toll Free 1-877-231-0558; Participant Code: 5349#.

Agenda items include:  Endorsement of Methods of Analysis Provisions in Codex Standards, Proposed Draft Principles for the Use of Sampling and Testing in International Food Trade: Explanatory notes (at Step 4), Discussion paper on considering procedures for establishing criteria, Discussion paper on elaboration of procedures for regular updating of methods, and Discussion paper on sampling in Codex standards.

Upcoming Physical Working Groups (pWG) 

Committee on Food Hygiene (CCFH) invites Codex members and observers to join a pWG, chaired by Japan and co-chaired by Canada, working in English only, on the Draft Guidelines on the Application of General Principles of Food Hygiene to the Control of Foodborne Parasites.  The Working Group will discuss and prepare proposals for the structure and approach for the document as well as for possible annexes (see REP 14/FH, paragraph 112). The Working Group will meet from May 28-30, 2014, in Tokyo, Japan. 

Participants are requested to complete a separate registration form and return it by March 31, 2014, to Ms. Keiko SAITO of the Japanese Codex Contact Point (E-mail: codexj@mhlw.go.jp) through your country’s Codex Contact Point. Parties in the United States interested in contributing to the U.S. participation should contact the U.S. Codex Office (USCodex@fsis.usda.gov) as soon as possible. 

Member delegations are limited to a maximum of 2 people due to conference room space. Participants will be responsible for their own travel arrangements and expenses; a list of hotels has been provided to the Codex Contact Points.  Participants are advised to inquire at the nearest Embassy or Consulate of Japan whether a visa and/or other documents are required to enter Japan. If required, participants are asked to apply for a visa well in advance, as visas are not issued upon arrival in Japan.

Committee on Residues of Veterinary Drugs in Foods (CCRVDF) requests comments and/or Information on the Priority List of Veterinary Drugs for Evaluation or Reevaluation by JECFA (CL2014/3-RVDF).  If you are interested in having your comments considered in the U.S. response to this circular letter letter, please send your comments to uscodex@fsis.usda.gov by November 1, 2014.  Other comments should be sent directly to the CCRVDF Secretariat (CCRVDF-USSEC@fsis.usda.gov) with a copy to the Codex Secretariat (codex@fao.org) by December 15, 2014.    A copy of this circular letter is available at:  http://www.codexalimentarius.org/circular-letters/circularletters20131/en/. Codex Secretariat Vacancy:  The position of Secretary of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (Vacancy No. AG/291/14) is currently being advertised.  As head of the Secretariat of the Codex Alimentarius Commission, the incumbent will report to the relevant Assistant Directors-General of FAO and WHO, while administratively under the supervision of the FAO Assistant Director-General of the Agriculture and Consumer Protection Department. The Secretariat services the sessions of the Commission and its subsidiary bodies, and acts as liaison between the Commission and interested sectors of FAO and WHO as well as the World Trade Organization (WTO), United Nations, and other international governmental and non-governmental organizations concerned with the health, quality and trade aspects of food standards.  Applications should be submitted February 10, 2014, using the FAO Personal History Form to the Director, Office of Human Resources (OHR), FAO, Viale delle Terme di Caracalla, 00153, Rome, Italy, or by e-mail to: Senior-vacancies@fao.org.  An additional Curriculum Vitae and/ or cover letter may also be included as part of the application if desired.
