What happens next?
You will receive an acknowledgement e-mail verifying your submission was successful. The automated system initially rates applicants based on the answers in your questionnaire. This self-determined rating, your resume and supporting documents will be carefully reviewed to ensure minimum qualifications are met. This review will take place prior to you being considered for a position. You will receive a Notice of Results; keep this Notice for your future reference. You will have a rating of either eligible or ineligible. There will be a Rating Code Message at the bottom of the Notice. If you are eligible, you will be on our applicant register. This register is a pool of applicants that can change on a daily basis.
How can I check my status?
You can monitor your application status by viewing the information in the MY USAJOBS tab in www.usajobs.gov. When you are in MY USAJOBS, go to MY Applications; you will be able to view application status information. This information is updated when new information is available.
Can I retake the Questionnaire?
The Job Announcements will be open for one year. You will be able to apply and complete the Online Questionnaire once during that year. If you are not selected for a position within that year, you may apply to the new Job Announcement when it opens the following year.
When will I be referred for a position?
If you are referred for an available position, you will be sent an inquiry letter to determine your availability for a specific position. This inquiry will tell you specific information about the vacancy, where it is located, the grade, salary, shift, promotion potential, etc. This inquiry letter is not a job offer. You must respond by indicating if you are or are not interested in the position; you are not penalized if you decline the position. Your response must be received by the deadline or you will not be considered for the position. Failure to respond to the inquiry will result in your name being removed from the applicant register and you will not be considered for future vacancies. You will be notified when you are being considered for a position. When we have a request to fill an open position, a certificate of eligible applicants will be issued for that geographic location. We are not able to predict when you will be referred for a position. It is dependent on several factors, such as your geographic availability, the number of applicants interested in that location, and the number of vacancies to be filled. Final selection decisions are made on a variety of job-related factors.
If you are selected for a position:
You can anticipate a start date of 4-8 weeks. This date is contingent upon successfully passing your background investigation and the medical physical. You will be sent forms to complete and return by the specific deadline. If you are not selected, your name and rating will be returned to the register for future referrals.
What if I need to update my applicant record?
If you need to change any of the information shown on your Notice of Results and want to update your applicant record, you must do so in writing. Please return the maintenance form by emailing email@example.com (for Veterinarian positions) or firstname.lastname@example.org (for Full Time or Intermittent Food Inspector positions). Otherwise, you may fax to (612) 370-2060, or you may mail it to the address shown on the top of your Notice of Results. Your record can be changed for any of the following reasons: your availability has changed and you no longer want to be considered for a position; you have a change of address, e-mail or phone number; or you would like to change your geographic availability. What locations are you hiring for?
We are continuously filling vacancies throughout the United States. At times we have difficulty filling vacancies in certain locations. Refer to VMO Recruitment Incentives (for Veterinarian positions) or Food Inspector Recruitment Incentives (for Food Inspector positions) for information on recruitment incentives in certain locations. Selecting a geographic area where we are offering a recruitment incentive does not necessarily increase your chances of being selected.
For all positions, we strongly encourage you to select geographic locations where you truly want to work and live. For intermittent positions, we do not recommend that you move since you are not guaranteed regular work and the work hours and shifts will vary. For intermittent positions, you must be available for all shifts and be able to report for work within one hour after receiving a request (by phone) to report for work.
