WASHINGTON, March 15, 2011 - Yamaya USA, Inc., a Torrance, Calif., establishment, is recalling
approximately 612 pounds of pork loin cutlet fritter products because they contain monosodium glutamate
(MSG) which is not declared on the label.
The products subject to recall include:
- 12-lb. cases of "PORK LOIN CUTLET FRITTER," containing 36 servings. These products have an identifying package code of "10812" and bear pack dates between "02/2/2011" and "03/3/2011."
Each case bears the establishment number "EST. 27510" inside the USDA mark of inspection. These
products were produced on various dates between Feb. 2, 2011 and March 3, 2011, and were shipped to wholesale
firms in Calif., Ga., Hawaii, Ill., N.J., and N.Y. for further sale.
The problem was discovered during a routine inspection by FSIS personnel. FSIS has determined that the MSG
was introduced into the product as a result of a new ingredient the company started to use at the time of
production. FSIS has received no reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products.
It should be noted that MSG can cause a brief reaction in people with sensitivity to MSG. Anyone concerned
about a reaction should contact a healthcare provider.
FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks (including at restaurants) to verify recalling firms notify
their customers of the recall and to ensure that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no
longer available to consumers.
Consumer and media with questions about the recall should contact the company's Office Manager,
Yuriko Hayashi at (310) 325-1710, Ext. 103.
Consumers with food safety questions can "Ask Karen," the FSIS virtual representative available
24 hours a day at AskKaren.gov. The toll-free USDA Meat and
Poultry Hotline 1-888-MPHotline (1-888-674-6854) is available in English and Spanish and can be reached from l0 a.m. to 4 p.m.
(Eastern Time) Monday through Friday. Recorded food safety messages are available 24 hours a day.
