Quarterly Issues of Food Safety Educator Now Available Online

The Food Safety Educator, the quarterly newsletter produced by the Food Safety Education staff, is now available online.   The current issue features the FSIS educational campaign to educate pregnant women on the risks of Listeria monocytogenes.  Also in this issue is a profile of Under Secretary for Food Safety Elsa Murano.  Access this issue and previous ones at: www.fsis.usda.gov/OA/educator/educator.htm

Dr. Elsa Murano Speaks at the National Meat Association’s 56th Annual Convention

On February 21, Dr. Elsa Murano, Under Secretary for Food Safety, spoke at the National Meat Association’s 56th Annual Convention in Monterey, California.  Dr. Murano provided attendees with an overview of the Administration’s strategy and goals for food safety.  The prepared remarks are available at: www.fsis.usda.gov/oa/speeches/speeches.htm.

U.S. Position on Biotech Labeling Now Available

The U.S. position on the Proposed Draft Recommendations for the Labeling of Foods Obtained through Certain Techniques of Genetic Modification/Genetic Engineering is now available on the Codex Web site. This position will be put forward by the U.S. Delegate at the Codex Committee on Food Labeling session meeting in Halifax, Canada, May 6-10, 2002. OPPDE’s Labeling 101 Presentation Is Now Available

The Office of Policy, Program Development and Evaluation’s Labeling and Consumer Protection Staff has produced a “Labeling 101” PowerPoint presentation on labeling requirements for FSIS-Regulated Product.  The Labeling and Consumer Protection Staff is using this presentation as a learning tool at food labeling workshops for industry in various location throughout the United States.  The complete presentation is accessible at: www.fsis.usda.gov/OPPDE/larc/Label101/index.htm

Draft HIMP Forms Available on Market Hogs and Young Turkeys

The Office of Policy, Program Development and Evaluation’s New Initiatives Staff has posted new draft HIMP forms for Postmortem Verification Inspection Activities, Ante-mortem Verification Inspection Activities, and 25-Day Results for market hogs and young turkeys.  The documents are accessible at the following Web sites:
