Codex Seeks Comments On Sanitary ad Phytosanitary International Standard-Setting Activities

WASHINGTON, June 8, 2004 – The Office of the Under Secretary for Food Safety, U.S. Department of Agriculture today announced the publication of standard setting activities of the 27th Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (Codex).
The notice provides a complete list of standard setting activities from June 1, 2003 to May 31, 2004 and from June 1, 2004 to May 31, 2005. This notice contains information on all planned Codex sessions that involve standard setting activities. The list of all scheduled sessions and standards currently under consideration include information on the agency that is responsible to the committee as well as the extent of U.S. involvement.
Comments are requested on all standards currently under consideration and suggestions for new standards. Codex carries out activities related to international sanitary and phytosanitary standard setting aimed at ensuring food products are free from adulteration and are correctly labeled.
Codex was created in 1963 by two United Nations organizations, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO). Codex develops food standards, guidelines and codes of practice in order to protect the health of consumers, ensure fair trade practices in the food trade and promote coordination of food standards undertaken by international governmental and non-governmental organizations.
