National Advisory Committee On Meat and Poultry Inspection To Hold Public Meeting

WASHINGTON, May 20, 2004–The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today that the National Advisory Committee on Meat and Poultry Inspection (NACMPI) will hold public meetings June 2-3, 2004. NACMPI will divide into three subcommittees that will also meet on June 2 to work on the issues discussed during the first full committee session.

The full committee will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 2, and from 8:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. on Thursday, June 3, at the Hilton Alexandria Old Town, 1767 King Street, Alexandria, Va. 22314. Subcommittees will hold their deliberations from 2:45 p.m. to 6 p.m. on June 2. Agenda items for the full committee meeting include the FSIS final rule on the control of Listeria monocytogenes in ready-to-eat meat and poultry products; the incorporation of food security measures into HACCP plans; and test-and-hold procedures for meat and poultry products that have been selected for microbiological or other testing by FSIS. The NACMPI was established in 1971 to provide advice and recommendations to the Secretary of Agriculture regarding meat and poultry inspection programs. The committee, which generally meets at least twice a year, addresses food safety concerns and policy issues affecting USDA.

Comments can also be submitted online at http://www.regulations.gov. All submissions must include the Agency name and docket #04-007N. Comments submitted will be available for public inspection in the FSIS Docket Room between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Comments will be posted at http://www.fsis.usda.gov/oppde/rdad/Notices04.htm.
