Public Meeting To Address Codex Committee On General Principles |

WASHINGTON, April 7, 2004 - The U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Department of
Health and Human Services today announced a public meeting to provide information and receive comments on
agenda items to be discussed at the 20th Session of the Codex Committee on General Principles in Paris,
France, May 3-7, 2004.
The public meeting will be held from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 13, 2004, in Room 107-A at the U.S. Department
of Agriculture, Jamie L. Whitten Federal Building, 1400 Independence Ave., SW, Washington, D.C.
Among the agenda items to be discussed are: Proposed Amendment to Rule VIII.5 of the Rules of Procedure, Proposed
Draft Working Principles for Risk Analysis for Food Safety, Proposed Draft Revision Code of Ethics for International
Trade in Foods and Definition of Traceability/Product Tracing of Foodstuffs. A complete agenda for the meeting

Codex was created in 1962 by two United Nations organizations, the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World
Health Organization. Codex develops food standards, guidelines and codes of practice in order to protect the
health of consumers, ensures fair practices in the food trade and promotes coordination of food standards undertaken
by international governmental and non-governmental organizations. The Codex Committee on General Principles was
established to address procedural and general matters referred to by the Codex Alimentarius Commission and is
hosted by the government of France.
