USDA To Implement Country-of-Origin Labeling
On September 30, USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) will issue a Notice
that instructs its inspection program personnel not to take enforcement action with respect to FSIS' interim
final rule on country-of-origin labeling (COOL). The Notice will be posted on FSIS' Web site at:
http://www.fsis.usda.gov/regulations_&_policies/ regulations_directives_&_notices/index.asp.
FSIS will defer to the Agricultural Marketing Service's (AMS) industry education and outreach program
during the first six months following implementation of COOL on September 30, 2008. AMS' education
and outreach program will assist industry in achieving compliance with the provisions and requirements
of the Agencies' rules. For more information on this program and AMS' Country of Origin Labeling Informational
Sessions, visit: http://www.ams.usda.gov/AMSv1.0/.
