Abstract Deadline for Upcoming Food Safety Education Conference Approaches
FSIS is accepting abstracts for oral presentations, poster sessions and educational exhibits for the 2006 Food Safety Education Conference, "Reaching At-Risk Audiences and Today's Other Food Safety Challenges."

The deadline for submitting abstracts is February 17. For information about submitting abstracts or attending the conference, visit FSIS' Web site at http://www.fsis.usda.gov/Denver2006.

The conference will be held at the Adam's Mark Hotel, 1550 Court Place, Denver, CO, September 27 through September 29. The conference is sponsored by: FSIS; NSF International; the Food and Drug Administration; the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; USDA's Cooperative State Research, Education and Service; and NSF/World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Food Safety.

The conference will focus on educating general and at-risk populations such as pregnant women, children, older adults, immune-compromised patients and culturally diverse populations. The agency is accepting abstracts on evidence-based food safety initiatives that address an aspect of food safety education related to consumers or the foodservice industry related to one or more of the conference themes listed below:
  • Foodborne Illness Surveillance and Epidemiological Insight
  • Food Safety Behavioral and Attitudinal Research
  • Social Marketing, Educational Interventions and Program Research
  • Roles of Food Service and Food Industries
  • New Technologies

Registration for Salmonella in Poultry Public Meeting
FSIS will hold a public meeting on Thursday, February 23 and Friday, February 24 in Atlanta, GA, to discuss post-harvest interventions to reduce Salmonella in poultry.

The meeting, which is scheduled for Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to noon, will be held at the Loudermilk Center, 40 Courtland Street, NE, Atlanta, GA 30303.

Pre-registration for the public meeting is encouraged. Registration will begin each day one-half hour before the start of the meeting.

FSIS Issues Directive on Ten-Day Letter for Inactive Operations
FSIS issued Directive 5220.3 on February 7 to provide district managers or the deputy of operations of the Import Inspection Division (IID) with information on how to respond to an establishment that is not operating and has not responded to district office inquiries regarding its operational status and intentions.

The directive titled, Issuance of a Ten-Day Letter for Inactive Operations, provides district managers and IIDs with procedures for communicating with inactive establishments and provides instructions for recording an establishment's activity status in the Performance- Based Inspection System.

IKE Preliminary Scenario Available Online
FSIS has made preliminary Interactive Knowledge Exchange (IKE) scenario 02D-06, Condensation from Drip Pans – Verification of 9 CFR 416.2(d), available for comment through February 17.

This scenario provides inspection program personnel with a thought process for determining noncompliance when condensation occurs in an official establishment.

FSIS Issues Rule on Ante-Mortem Inspection of Horses
FSIS published an interim final rule on February 8 in the Federal Register titled, Ante-Mortem Inspection of Horses.

The rule announces that FSIS is establishing a voluntary fee-for-service program under which establishments that slaughter horses can continue to receive ante-mortem inspection.

The interim rule will become effective on March 10. The agency is accepting comments until March 9. Comments may be submitted through Federal eRulemaking at http://www.regulations.gov or by email at FSIS.RegulationsComments@usda.gov.

USDA and Health and Human Services to Hold Public Meeting to Address Codex Committee on Milk and Milk Products
USDA's Office of the Under Secretary for Food Safety and USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS), along with the Department of Health and Human Services' Food and Drug Administration, will hold a public meeting on agenda items and draft U.S. positions that will be discussed at the Seventh Session of the Codex Committee on Milk and Milk Products (CCMMP) of the Codex Alimentarius Commission.

The public meeting will be held on March 14 from 9 a.m.–12:00 p.m. in Room 2504 of the South Agriculture Building, 1400 Independence Avenue, SW, Washington, DC. 20250. Pre-registration for the public meeting is required.

FSIS Emails more than Four Million Alerts
FSIS' email subscription service surpassed the four million mark on February 1 for alerts sent to subscribers. Industry, consumers, media, educators and agency employees rely on the public health and food safety information distributed by the service. The four million threshold is especially significant given the vital role played by public health communications.

Subscription options include newsletters, news releases, recalls, meat and poultry export information, and much more. Subscribers can customize their selections by adding or deleting items at any time. They also have the option to password protect their accounts.
