EPA’s Risk Communication Workshop:
A Unique and Essential Experience for
Food Safety Educators
What do you say
when frightened citizens are screaming
at you about a contaminated food
product? Or when people are demanding
that you tell them how to safely
prepare foods that might have been
intentionally contaminated with
harmful bacteria?
Recently the U.S. Department of
Agriculture, the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration, the Australia New
Zealand Food Authority, and the Swiss
Federal Veterinary Office found
answers to similar risk communication
situations by attending EPA’s Public
Involvement and Risk Communication
Workshop. Here are their reactions:
“The best training I’ve ever had--bar
none.” “Made me think about how to
better do all the parts of my job.”
“It’s interactive quality is really
what makes it come alive!”
Whether it’s contaminated foods or
the environment, people and emotions
are the common factor. This workshop
gives you practical strategies to
minimize panic and build public trust
for your actions.
This 4-hour workshop will give you
hands-on practical experience and
provide guidelines and skills to
weather a communication crisis.
The instructor:
Captain Alvin
Chun, USPHS, Senior Policy Advisor.
