WASHINGTON, Feb. 19, 1999 -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service will publish the proposal to allow irradiation of raw meat and meat products in the Federal Register on Wednesday, February 24. The proposed regulation is now on view at the Federal Register.
The proposal, first announced by Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman on Feb. 12, will permit ionizing radiation to be used to treat refrigerated or frozen uncooked meat, and certain raw meat food products to reduce levels of foodborne pathogens.
After publication, written comments can be submitted until April 26 to: FSIS Docket Clerk, Docket #97-076P, Room 101 Cotton Annex, 300 12th Street, SW, Washington, DC 20250-3700. All comments will be available for viewing the the FSIS Docket Room between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
