Personal Consumption Shipments |
INTRODUCTION
Shipments that are intended for personal consumption are exempt from FSIS reinspection. However, personal consumption shipments must meet United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Animal Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) requirements.

USDA, APHIS REQUIREMENTS
Personal consumption shipments of meat, poultry, and/or egg products must meet USDA, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) requirements and USDA, Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) requirements. It is the responsibility of the person bringing the product into the United States to notify APHIS and present the shipment to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Agriculture Inspector (AI) upon arrival in the US.
Certain shipments of product require certification issued by the foreign government for clearance by DHS, CBP, AI to enter the United States. APHIS, Veterinary Services may be contacted at (301) 734-3277 and DHS, Customs & Border Protection may be contacted at (202) 354-1000.
LIMITS AND CONDITIONS
Meat, poultry and egg products can be imported into the United States as personal consumption shipments with the following limits and conditions:
Product must be presented to the DHS, Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Agriculture Inspector (AI) at the port of entry.
Shipments cannot exceed 50 lbs (22.7 kg) for meat and poultry.
Shipments cannot exceed 30 lbs (13.6 kg) for liquid eggs and 50lbs (22.7 kg) for dry eggs.
Shipment is limited to personal use only.
No item in the shipment can be sold or distributed.
When requested by FSIS, the shipment must be inspected to determine whether it is eligible to be imported under the personal consumption category.
