Harry Lee Walker, DVM Harry Lee Walker, DVM was born in San Antonio, Texas. He grew up on a small ranch in Sutherland Springs, a small community outside of San Antonio. He is a graduate of Floresville High School, Trinity University in San Antonio, and received his DVM from Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. Dr. Walker then completed a residency in Veterinary Pathology at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology and a Preceptorship at the Smithsonian National Zoo, both in Washington, DC. Dr. Walker started his career in the United States Army and during that time traveled over much of the United States and served in Korea as Chief of Animal Medicine, 8th US Army. After leaving the military he went back to Sutherland Springs and established a practice consisting of mostly cattle and small animals. Finally he took employment with USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service. Dr. Walker was the SVMO-IIC of 3D, a fast cattle kill in Dumas, Texas and did relief work at establishments that slaughtered cull cows, mixed species, sheep, and goats. He came to Washington DC in 1997 and was on the team that formed the HACCP-based Inspection Models Project (HIMP) and it’s implementation in the field. Presently he is a Veterinary Medical Officer with the Animal and Egg Production Food Safety Staff. Dr. Walker’s most notable accomplishments are receiving an All American Award for Journalism as Editor of The Southwestern Veterinarian in 1978, receiving an Army Commendation in 1982, and being included in Who’s Who in Veterinary Science and Medicine in 1991. He co-founded the Sutherland Springs Historical Museum in 1992, and published Relevance of Carcass Palpation to Protecting Public Health in 2000. He remains active in volunteer work and is presently the Chair of the Garden Guild at St. James Episcopal Church in Washington and is active on a number of civil right advisory counsels within USDA. |
