Jim G. Rasekh, Ph.D. Dr. Jim Rasekh presently is a Food Scientist/Technologist with the Office of Policy Program Development and Evaluation, Food Safety and Inspection service of the United States Department of Agriculture. The Agency reports to the office of the UnderSecretary for Food safety of the Department. Dr. Rasekh received a Bachelor degree and a Master degree in Agricultural Engineering and Agronomy (Soil Physics) from the University of Maryland. He also has earned a Ph.D. in Food Science major in biochemistry and biometrics also from the University of Maryland. He did his Post Doctoral Research in the area of Seafood Research Laboratory of the Department of Commerce, College Park, Maryland. Before joining USDA, Dr. Rasekh was a scientific advisor in the office of Science and Technology of the National Marine Fisheries Service of the Department of Commerce. While working for Post Doctoral research Dr. Rasekh was teaching Food Science courses including Quality Assurance at the University of Maryland. Dr. Rasekh has in depth knowledge and experience with Hazards Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) techniques, and has developed written several performance standards for in the areas of food safety and food processing. Dr. Rasekh has in-depth knowledge of International Food Standards and Codex Alimentarius and has developed several international standards for seafood products. His present experience and responsibilities with the Department is in the areas of standards and policy development mainly in the field of food safety and risk analysis. These areas of expertise include evaluation of chemistry and safety of food safety such as Food Irradiation and Food Biotechnology. For the last several years Dr. Rasekh has served as an expert in food processing for other government agencies. For the last several years he has been a liaison and scientific expert and peer review member and advisor to agencies, such as state governments, academia, food industry, Agriculture Research Service, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), National Academy of Science (NAS), Agency for International Development (AID), Cooperative Education Economic Service (CSREES), and the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT). In 1988, Dr. Rasekh developed and served as a co-director of the continued education program of Food Safety Inspection Service. Dr. Rasekh is the author and co-author of more than 35 scientific publications in the area of food safety and food processing, and he is the member of several professional societies. In 1995 Dr. Rasekh served as a principal food scientist in the Department Office of Biotechnology. Dr. Rasekh presently is a Biological Scientist with Animal and Egg Production Food Safety Staff of the Food Safety Inspection Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In November 1999, Dr. Rasekh was elected as a fellow of Washington Academy of Sciences, and received USDA honorary award for Harmonization Initiative activities on Civil Rights. |
