Colorado Firm Recalls Bratwurst Sausages
Because of Undeclared Ingredient

WASHINGTON, Aug. 16, 2000--Canino’s Sausage Co., Inc., a Denver, Colo., firm, is voluntarily recalling approximately l,l00 pounds of bratwurst sausages because they contain monosodium glutamate (MSG), and it is undeclared on the label, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced today.

MSG is used as a flavor enhancer in a variety of foods prepared at home, in restaurants, and by food processors. Some persons who have eaten foods containing MSG have reported adverse reactions.

The products being recalled are 1- and 3.9-pound packages of "CANINO’S BRATWURST," and ten-pound boxes of "CANINO’S BRATWURST." The 1- and 3.9-pound packages have a "SELL BY" date of "08 28 00"on the label. Each ten-pound box bears a label with a "SELL BY" date of "08 26 00," with a case code of 0815 stamped on the box. In addition, "EST. 1437" appears in the USDA seal of inspection on each label.

The product was produced on Aug. 15 and distributed to retail stores and delis in the Denver area.

"FSIS ensures that meat and poultry products are safe, wholesome, and accurately labeled," said Thomas J. Billy, FSIS administrator. "Consumers who have concerns about MSG should return the product to the point of purchase."

The problem was discovered by an FSIS inspector at the establishment.

Consumers and media with questions about the recall may contact Diana L. Payne, Canino’s Sausage Co., Inc., at (303) 455-4339, or (800) 538-0148.

Consumers with food safety questions can phone the toll-free USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at l-800-535-4555. The hotline can be reached from l0 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Eastern Time) Monday through Friday, and recorded food safey messages are available 24 hours a day.
