Congressional and Public Affairs FSIS, FDA To Hold Public Meeting To Discuss Agenda Items For Codex Committee On Fish And Fishery Products WASHINGTON, D.C., July 10 , 2003—The USDA’s Office of the Under Secretary for Food Safety and the Health and Human Services Department’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will hold a public meeting on September 3, 2003, to discuss agenda items and receive comments in preparation for the 26th Session of the Codex Committee on Fish and Fishery Products, which will be held Oct. 13-17 in Alesund, Norway. Codex was created in 1963 by two United Nations organizations, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO). Codex develops food standards, guidelines and codes of practice in order to protect the health of consumers ensure fair trade practices in the food trade and promote coordination of food standards work undertaken by international governmental and non-governmental organizations. Numerous issues will be discussed during the October meeting, including matters referred by the Codex Alimentarius Commission and other Codex committees. Several proposed draft standards for fish and shell-fish products will also be addressed. A complete list of agenda items may be found in the Federal Register notice at www.(TBD).gov. The public meeting to review agenda items will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 3, at the Harvey Wiley Federal Building, 5100 Paint Branch Parkway, College Park, Maryland.
