WASHINGTON, May 9, 2002--The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced today that it is seeking nominations for membership on the National Advisory Committee on Microbiological Criteria for Foods (NACMCF).
Nominations are being sought for scientists with expertise in epidemiology, food technology, microbiology, risk assessment, infectious disease and biostatistics. These scientists may currently be employed in state and federal governments, industry, academia or other scientific positions.
The NACMCF, established in 1988, provides scientific advice on public health issues relative to the safety and wholesomeness of the U.S. food supply. The committee serves the following departments: USDA (Food Safety and Inspection Service), Health and Human Services (Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), Commerce (National Marine Fisheries Service) and Defense (Veterinary Service Activity), encompassing all aspects of food safety and public health concerns.
The secretary of agriculture will make the appointments to the committee after consultation with the secretary for health and human services. Members serve a two-year term on the advisory committee, with the possibility of renewing the commitment for three consecutive terms. It is anticipated that the full committee will meet at least once a year and subcommittees will meet as deemed necessary.
Nominations and resumes will be received for the next 30 days and should be sent to: Karen Thomas, advisory committee specialist, USDA, FSIS, Room 333, Aerospace Center, 1400 Independence Ave. SW, Washington, DC 20250.
