WASHINGTON, April 24, 2002--The owner of Clausen Meats, a Los Olivos, Calif., firm, was sentenced in federal court Feb. 11 for violating the Federal Meat Inspection Act, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection announced today.
Brian F. Clausen was sentenced in the U.S. District Court, Central District of California, on two felony charges for transporting and selling adulterated and misbranded Danish sausage products made at his federally inspected facility. Clausen labeled product as pork and veal when it actually contained pork and poultry.
The court placed Clausen on probation for five years, ordered him to perform 1,500 hours of community service, and pay a special assessment fee of $200. He must also pay restitution to two Buellton restaurants.
This legal action is the result of an investigation conducted by FSIS officials. FSIS is responsible for ensuring that all meat, poultry and egg products are safe, wholesome and correctly labeled.
