WASHINGTON, March 19, 2002— The Office of the Undersecretary for Food Safety, U.S. Department of Agriculture, today announced a March 26 public meeting to discuss agenda items for the upcoming 17th session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission's Committee on General Principles. The public meeting will be co-sponsored by the Food and Drug Administration, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
The CCGP deals with procedural and general matters referred to it by the Codex Commission, such as defining the scope and purpose of the commission and establishing a code of ethics for the international trade of food. The committee’s 17th session will meet April 15-19 in Paris, France.
The public meeting to discuss the agenda will be held from 1-4 p.m., Tuesday, March 26, at Room 107A, Jamie L. Whitten Building, 1400 Independence Ave., SW, Washington, D.C.
Agenda items to be discussed include risk analysis, guidelines for cooperation with international intergovernmental organizations, Codex membership for regional organizations and revisions in the code of ethics for the international trade of food.

Codex seeks to protect the health of consumers and to ensure fair practices in food trade. This goal is pursued by promoting the adoption and implementation by governments of food standards, codes of practice and other guidelines developed by Codex committees.
