WASHINGTON, April 17, 2001--The National Advisory Committee on Microbiological Criteria for Foods (NACMCF) will hold a committee meeting on May 7, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced today. The meeting is open to the public.
The committee will review scientific issues related to FSIS Escherichia coli O157:H7 policy. They will also begin consideration, as directed by Congress, of issues regarding microbiological performance standards, including the role of such standards in assuring meat and poultry product safety.
The meeting will be held on Monday, May 7, beginning at 8:30 a.m., at the Washington Plaza Hotel, Federal Ballroom, 10 Thomas Circle, NW, at Massachusetts Avenue & 14th Street, Washington, DC 20005. The NACMCF provides scientific advice and recommendations to the Secretary of Agriculture and the Secretary of Health and Human Services on public health issues relative to the safety and wholesomeness of the U.S. food supply. This includes development of microbiological criteria and review and evaluation of epidemiological and risk assessment data and methodologies for assessing microbiological hazards in foods.
The committee serves the U.S. Departments of Agriculture (Food Safety and Inspection Service), Health and Human Services (Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), Defense (U.S. Army), and Commerce (National Marine Fisheries Service). All participating agencies share in its annual budget.
