About Vet2011
This year marks the 250th anniversary of the veterinary profession, and FSIS will be celebrating by acknowledging the opening of the first
veterinarian school in Lyon, France, in 1761.
FSIS kicked off the celebration with an opening ceremony on February 4 in the Jefferson Auditorium in Washington, DC, from 9:00 to
11:00 a.m. The theme of the celebration, "Vet 2011," not only marks the anniversary of the creation of veterinary training,
but the celebration of the veterinary profession that has been working to improve both animal and human health for the past 250 years.
FSIS is the largest employer of veterinarians worldwide; the USDA Animal and Plant Health
Inspection Service (APHIS) is the second.
