Public Meeting to Address Codex Committee on Milk and Milk Products

WASHINGTON, December 29, 2009 - The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Office of Food Safety and the Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) today announced a public meeting to provide information and receive comments on agenda items and draft U.S. positions that will be discussed at the 9th Session of the Codex Committee on Milk and Milk Products (CCMMP), to be held in Auckland, New Zealand, February 1 - 5, 2010.

The public meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, January 13, 2010, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., in Room 4074 of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's South Building, 1400 Independence Ave., SW, Washington, DC 20250. Attendees will be required to present photo identification at the door.

Matters before the Committee include:
  • Maximum levels of annatto extracts in Codex Standards for milk and milk products.
  • Draft Amendment to the Codex Standard for Fermented Milks pertaining to drinks based on fermented milk.
  • Consistency of the Model Export Certificate for Milk and Milk Products with the Generic Model Official Certificate.

A complete agenda and documents relating to the 9th Session of CCMMP will be available on the Codex Alimentarius Web site at http://www.codexalimentarius.net/current.asp.

CCMMP was established to set voluntary codes and standards for milk and milk products. The Committee is hosted by the Government of New Zealand.

Codex was created in 1963 by two United Nations organizations: the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization. Codex develops food standards, guidelines and codes of practice in order to protect the health of consumers, ensure fair food trade practices and promote coordination of food standards undertaken by international governmental and non-governmental organizations.
