USDA Holds Public Meeting to Address Agenda Items for 43rd Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission on Food Hygiene

WASHINGTON, Nov. 7, 2011 - The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Office of Food Safety, in conjunction with the Food and Drug Administration of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is holding a public meeting to provide information and receive public comments on agenda items, as well as to draft U.S. positions to be discussed at the 43rd Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission Committee on Food Hygiene (CCFH), to be held in Miami, Fla., Dec. 5-9.

The public meeting will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 15, from 1-4 p.m, in Room 107-A, USDA, Jamie L. Whitten Building, 1400 Independence Ave. S.W., Washington, DC 20250. To participate through teleconference, dial (888) 858-2144, and enter the passcode 6208658.

The following items, among others, will be discussed during the public meeting:
  • Matters arising from the work of Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), World Health Organization (WHO), and other International Intergovernmental Organizations.
  • Proposed draft guidelines for control of specific zoonotic parasites in meat: Trichinella spiralis and Cysticercus bovis.
  • Proposed draft guidelines on the application of general principles of food hygiene to control viruses in food.
  • Draft revision of the Principles for the Establishment and Application of Microbiological Criteria for Foods.
  • CCFH work priorities and new assignments.

Codex was established in 1963 by two United Nations organizations (the FAO and the WHO). Through adoption of food standards, codes of practice and other guidelines developed by its committees, and by promoting their adoption and implementation by governments, Codex seeks to protect the health of consumers and ensure fair practices in the food trade.
