WASHINGTON, Oct. 28, 2005 - USDA's Food and Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) announced
today that the National Advisory Committee on Meat and Poultry Inspection (NACMPI) will meet
Nov. 15 and 16, 2005.
The full committee will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, and Wednesday, Nov. 16. Subcommittees
will hold public meetings from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 15. All committee meetings will take place
in the conference room at the south end of the USDA cafeteria located in the Department of Agriculture
South Building, 1400 Independence Ave., S.W., Washington, D.C.
At the full committee meeting FSIS will offer a presentation on risk-based inspection. The goal of risk-based
inspection is to use FSIS inspection program personnel effectively and efficiently to further improve food
safety and protect the public's health by relying on sound science to more effectively mitigate risk.
Attendees will have the opportunity to offer input on issues FSIS will address in moving towards risk-based
inspection systems as well as in using data to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of this approach.
A meeting agenda will be available online at: http://www.fsis.usda.gov/News_&_Events/ meetings_&_events/index.asp.
The NACMPI was established in 1971 to provide advice and recommendations to the Secretary of Agriculture
regarding meat and poultry inspection programs. The committee, which generally meets twice a year, addresses
food safety and policy issues affecting USDA.
