Statement to Employees by Administrator Thomas J. Billy on Employees Deaths
Congressional and Public Affairs
(202) 720-9113

WASHINGTON, June 22, 2000 - "I am shocked and profoundly saddened by the fatal shootings of two FSIS compliance officers and one California investigator yesterday at the Santos Linguisa Co., a sausage processor in San Leandro, California.

"My deepest sympathy is extended to the families and friends of the USDA compliance officers and the California investigator who lost their lives in the line of duty.

"Every day, more than 7,500 FSIS field personnel work to ensure the safety of the nation's meat and poultry supply. The FSIS family shares in this tragic loss.

"We will work with the FBI and California law enforcement to ensure that the person responsible is held accountable."
