USDA Announces Public Meeting, Seeks Comments on Positions of Food Labeling Committee of Codex Alimentarius Commission

WASHINGTON, April 13, 2011 - The U.S. Department of Agriculture´s (USDA)
Office of Food Safety today announces an April 25, 2011, public meeting of the Codex
Committee on Food Labeling (CCFL) of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (Codex). The meeting
will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. at the USDA headquarters, Room 107-A, Whitten Building,
located at 1400 Independence Ave., S.W., in Washington, D.C.
The objective of the April 25 public meeting is to provide information, receive public
comments on agenda items and draft United States positions that will be discussed at the
39th Session of the CCFL that will be held in Quebec, Canada, May 9-13, 2011. The following
agenda items will be discussed at both the April 25 public meeting in Washington, D.C., and
at the 39th Session of the CCFL in Quebec: implementation of the World Health Organization´s
Global Strategy on diet, physical activity and health; guidelines for the production,
processing, labeling and marketing of organically produced foods; and labeling of food and
food ingredients obtained through genetic engineering techniques and other matters. To

The CCFL´s responsibilities include drafting provisions on labeling applicable to all foods;
studying problems associated with the advertisement of food with particular reference to claims
and misleading descriptions; and studying specific labeling problems assigned to it by the
commission.
Codex was established in 1963 by two United Nations organizations, the Food and Agriculture
Organization and the World Health Organization. Through adoption of food standards, codes
of practice, and other guidelines developed by its committees, and by promoting their
adoption and implementation by governments, Codex seeks to protect the health of consumers
and ensure that fair practices are used in international food trade. Codex Committee public
meetings are intended to ensure a consistent approach to U.S. and international food safety
systems on policies and procedures through input from subject matter experts.
