WASHINGTON, March 23, 2010 - The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Office of Food Safety and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS) Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are sponsoring a public meeting to provide information and receive public comments on agenda items and draft U.S. positions that will be discussed at the 38th Session of the Codex Committee on Food Labeling (CCFL), to be held in Quebec City, Canada, May 3 - 7, 2010.

The public meeting will be held on April 7, 2010, from 2 to 5 p.m., in Room 107-A, at the USDA's Jamie L. Whitten Building, 1400 Independence Ave., SW, Washington, DC. To participate through teleconference for the meeting, dial (866) 692-3158, and enter the passcode 5986642.

Documents and agenda items related to the 38th Session of the CCFL will be accessible at the Codex Web site at www.codexalimentarius.net/current.asp.

Codex was established in 1963 by two United Nations organizations, the Food Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization. Through adoption of food standards, codes of practice and other guidelines developed by its committees, and by promoting their adoption and implementation by governments, Codex seeks to protect the health of consumers and ensure that fair practices are used in trade.

The CCFL is responsible for drafting provisions on labeling applicable to all foods; considering, amending if necessary, and endorsing draft specific provisions on labeling of draft standards, codes of practice and guidelines prepared by other Codex Committees; studying specific labeling problems assigned to it by the Codex Commission; and studying problems associated with the advertisement of food with particular reference to claims and misleading descriptions.

The U.S. Delegate to the 38th Session of the CCFL, Barbara Schneeman, invites interested U.S. parties to submit their comments electronically to the following e-mail address: Rita.Nalubola@fda.hhs.gov.

For further information about the 38th Session of the CCFL, please contact Doreen Chen-Moulec, international issues analyst, U.S. Codex Office, Food Safety and Inspection Service, at (202) 205-7760, or by e-mail at Doreen.Chen-Moulec@fsis.usda.gov.
