WASHINGTON, Mar 13, 2009 - The Office of the Under Secretary for Food Safety, U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) today announced a public meeting to provide information and receive public comments on agenda items and draft U.S. positions that will be discussed at the 37th Session of the Codex Committee on Food Labeling (CCFL), to be held in Calgary, Canada, May 4 - 8, 2009.

The public meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 7, 2009, from 1 to 4 p.m., in Room 107A, Jamie Whitten Federal Building, 1200 Independence Ave., SW, Washington, DC, 20250. Attendees must pre-register and present photo identification at the door. To pre-register, please send your name, organization, mailing address, phone number, and e-mail address to Maria Espinoza by e-mail at uscodex@fsis.usda.gov, by phone at (202) 205-7760 or by fax (202) 720-3157.

Documents and agenda items related to the 37th Session Session of CCFL will be available on the Codex Alimentarius Web site at www.codexalimentarius.net/current.asp.

Codex was created in 1963 by two United Nations organizations, the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization. Codex develops food standards, guidelines and codes of practice in order to protect the health of consumers, and ensure fair food trade practices and promote coordination of food standards undertaken by international governmental and non-governmental organizations.

The CCFL drafts provisions on labeling applicable to all foods; considers, amends if necessary, and endorses specific provisions on labeling of draft standards codes of practice, and guidelines prepared by other Codex committees; studies specific labeling problems assigned to the Committee by the Commission; and studies problems associated with the advertisement of food with particular reference to claims and misleading descriptions. The Committee is chaired by Canada.

Written comments may be submitted by interested parties by e-mail to the U.S. Delegate to the CCFL, Dr. Barbara Schneeman, FDA, at ccfl@fda.hhs.gov. For further information concerning the 37th Session of the CCFL, contact Dr. Michael Wehr, FDA, by e-mail at Michael_Wehr@fda.hhs.gov, or (301) 436-1724, or by fax at (301) 436-2618.
