WASHINGTON, February 12, 2010 - The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Office of Food Safety and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today announced a public meeting to provide information and receive comments on agenda items and draft U.S. positions that will be discussed at the 31st Session of the Codex Committee on Methods of Analysis and Sampling (CCMAS), to be held in Budapest, Hungary, March 8 - 12, 2010.

The public meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, February 16, 2010, from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m., in Room 1A-002, FDA, Harvey Wiley Federal Building, 5100 Paint Branch Parkway, College Park, MD. Documents relating to the 31st Session of CCMAS will be available on the Codex Alimentarius Web site at http://www.codexalimentarius.net/current.asp.

CCMAS was established to define appropriate criteria for, endorse, and specify reference methods of analysis and sampling. CCMAS also elaborates sampling plans and considers specific sampling and analysis problems. The Committee is hosted by Hungary. The 31st session of CCMAS will discuss the Proposed Draft Guidelines on Criteria for Methods for Detection, Identification and Quantification of Specific DNA Sequences and Specific Proteins, in Particular in Foods Derived from Modern Biotechnology and Methods of Analysis for Natural Mineral Waters.

Codex was created in 1963 by two United Nations organizations: the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization. Codex develops food standards, guidelines and codes of practice in order to protect the health of consumers, ensure fair food trade practices and promote coordination of food standards undertaken by international governmental and non-governmental organizations.

To gain admittance to the public meeting, individuals must pre-register and present photo identification at the door. To pre-register, attendees must submit their name, organization, mailing address, phone number, and e-mail address to Gregory.Diachenko@fda.hhs.gov no later than February 15, 2010.
