Public Meeting to Review Positions of Codex Committee on Contaminants in Food
Congressional and Public Affairs
(202) 720-9113
Adrian Gianforti

WASHINGTON, Feb. 8, 2011 - The Office of the Under Secretary for Food Safety, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS) Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are sponsoring a public meeting to provide information and solicit public comments on the draft U.S. positions that the U.S. delegation proposes to present at the 5th session of the Codex Committee on Contaminants in Food (CCCF) of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (Codex) slated for The Hague, The Netherlands from March 21-25, 2011.

The public meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2011, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the FDA, Harvey W. Wiley Federal Building, Room 1A - 001, 5100 Paint Branch Parkway, College Park, MD, 20740. To participate through teleconference, dial (866) 692-3158, passcode: 5986642.

The CCCF establishes or endorses permitted maximum levels (ML), and where necessary, revises existing guidelines for contaminants and naturally occurring toxicants in food and feed. The upcoming session of the CCCF will consider MLs for a variety of contaminants in foods including arsenic in rice, deoxynivalenol in cereals and cereal-based products, mycotoxins in sorghum, aflatoxins in dried figs and ochratoxin in cocoa. Additionally the committee will discuss a possible Code of Practice for reducing furans in food and guidance on risk management options for dealing with the results of new risk assessments.

Endorsement of a provision for health-related limits for certain substances in the standard for natural mineral waters and a priority list of contaminants and naturally occurring toxicants proposed for JECFA evaluation will also be considered. A complete agenda and documents relating to the 5th session of the CCCF will be available on the Codex Alimentarius website at: www.codexalimentarius.net/web/current.jsp.

Codex was created in 1963 by two United Nations entities: the Food and Agriculture Organization and World Health Organization. Through adoption of food standards, codes of practice, and other guidelines developed by its committees, and by promoting their adoption and implementation by governments, Codex seeks to protect the health of consumers and ensure that fair practices are used in international food trade. Codex Committee public meetings are intended to ensure a consistent approach to U.S. and international food safety systems on policies and procedures through input from subject matter experts.

For further information concerning the 5th session of the Codex Committee on Contaminants in Food, submitting written comments electronically, or further information about the public meeting, contact Henry Kim, Ph. D., Office of Food Safety, FDA, at (301) 436-2023 or by e-mail at Henry.Kim@fda.hhs.gov.
