WASHINGTON, February 03, 2004 – The Office of the Under Secretary for Food Safety, U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration today announced a public meeting to provide information and receive comments on agenda items in anticipation of the 36th Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission's Committee on Food Additives and Contaminants (CCFAC), March 22-26 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
The public meeting will be held from 1-4 p.m., Monday, February 9, in the auditorium of the Harvey W. Wiley Federal Building, 5100 Paint Branch Parkway, College Park, MD. Agenda items for the meeting can be found at http://www.codexalimentarius.net/current.asp
Codex was created in 1963 by two United Nations organizations, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO). Codex develops food standards, guidelines and codes of practice in order to protect the health of consumers, ensure fair trade practices in the food trade and promote coordination of food standards work undertaken by international governmental and non-governmental organizations.
CCFAC establishes or endorses maximum or guideline levels for individual food additives, for contaminants (including environmental contaminants) and naturally occurring toxicants in foodstuffs and animal feeds. In addition, the Committee prepares priority lists of food additives and contaminants for toxicological evaluation by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives; recommends specifications of identity and purity for food additives for adoption by the Commission; considers methods of analysis for the determination of food additives and contaminants in food; and considers standards or codes for related subjects such as the labeling of food additives when sold as such and food irradiation.
To submit comments contact the FSIS Docket Room, Docket #03-047N, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Food Safety and Inspection Service, Room 102, Cotton Annex, 300 12th Street, SW, Washington, DC 20250-3700.
